The Lawrenceville physicians at Rodriguez MD believe that patients play a key role in their own health care. We encourage our patients to ask questions. Honest communication between doctors and patients is key to properly diagnosing and treating medical conditions.

However, we know that sometimes remembering everything you want to ask can be difficult. That’s why we encourage patients to prepare questions to bring with them to their appointment at our Lawrenceville health clinic, whether they’re coming here for a check-up or a health concern. This will help make the most of the time you have with the doctor and the other medical professionals.

Before Your Appointment

Write down what you want to discuss with the doctor and the questions you have. These will be determined by the reason for your appointment. Most patients who come to our Lawrenceville family health center are having a routine check-up and/or tests, have a health issue, need to renew or change medicines or come in to discuss treatment options after a diagnosis.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality website has a handy Question Builder to help people prepare for their medical appointment. The list of questions is “built” based on the reason for the appointment.

In addition to being prepared with questions, if you are visiting the doctor for the first time, it’s helpful to know your own health history, including past illnesses and surgeries, as well as your family’s health history — particularly that of your parents. You should also bring a list of all of your medications (both prescription and over-the-counter). Sometimes it’s helpful to bring in the actual medications so that we can see the precise medications and dosages.

Some people also prefer to bring a family member or loved one with them. This can help ensure that you don’t forget anything and that you hear and understand everything the doctor says. Many of our older patients find this helpful. If your primary language is Spanish, don’t worry. Our Lawrenceville doctors and staff speak both English and Spanish.

During Your Appointment

It’s not uncommon for patients to feel like they’re being barraged with information and unfamiliar terms when they’re talking to their doctor. Don’t be afraid to tell the doctor to slow down. Depending on what medication or treatment is recommended, there are important questions that you should ask. Here are a few examples.

  • If a test is ordered, find out what it’s for and when you should expect the results. (Then follow up if you haven’t heard anything within the time frame given. Don’t just assume that “No news is good news.”)
  • If a treatment is recommended, ask why this one is preferable and if there are alternatives.
  • If a procedure is suggested, ask how many times the doctor has performed it and whether it is done in the clinic or at a hospital.
  • If a new medication is prescribed, ask about possible side effects and interactions with other drugs.

Following Your Appointment

Before you leave, be sure that you are clear on any next steps. Do you need a follow-up appointment? Do you need to schedule tests or lab work? Does your doctor want you to call and report your progress?

If you think of questions after you leave, don’t hesitate to call. You should also contact your doctor if you experience any side effects from a treatment or medication or if your symptoms worsen. Don’t forget to follow up on test or lab results.
